Audio plugin software for recording home studios, are computer effect programs that work in the virtual mixer of a multitrack sequencer. Plugins are software emulations of hardware effects units. There are mixing plugins for effects like reverb, delay, flange and chorus and distortion. Or mastering effect processors such as limiters, compressors, exciters, and stereo imagers. Plugins are either track, bus or mix based. Track based plugins affect only individual tracks. Bus based plugins apply to a submix or group of tracks, but not the entire final mix. Plugins that go through all audio of a final mix are called mastering plugins. This is the last step in the production before reproduction and distribution. A great feature of audio plugins is that a variety of formats are compatible with a different multitrack sequencers. Some common audio plugin formats are VST, DirectX, RTAS, Core Audio, AudioSuite, MAS and TDM.
