17. Learn Home Recording Samplers & Sampling

Learn home recording samplers. Electronic music instruments which play sounds generated from recordings, called samples. A sampler plays back sounds that are stored in the sample space or RAM (Random Access Memory) and can be accessed quickly.

A sampler plays sounds back according to how the instrument is set up. Each sample is connected to a set of parameters, and can be changed in different ways.

Note input values determine which sample is accessed by the sampler. Most samplers are polyphonic and play more than one note at a time, and multitimbral, which can play multiple different sounds at the same time.

The number of channels determine the MIDI instruments which can be connected. The bit depth is the sample resolution supported, and audio outputs are usually available for monitoring and playback.

A sampler is usually connected to a music keyboard called a MIDI controller, or some other external MIDI source. Samples can be assigned to a group of notes across a musical range. A keyzone is a group of notes which a particular sampler is connected to. A group of keyzones is called a keymap.
