14. Home Studio Live Recording Microphone Basics

How microphones work for home studio live recording.

Microphones are transducers which change sound waves from air pressure, into a pattern of electricity. From sound waves, into a very small amount of electric current, the microphone signal is amplified over a thousand times for recording.

Any additional electrical noise is amplified as well. Dynamic microphones are generally much quieter than condenser microphones, but are fine with quality circuitry and parts.

The most common for recording microphones are dynamic or condenser microphones. Condenser microphones use batteries or power from a console mixer for operation. Dynamic microphones do not. There are great sounding microphones available in both styles. When choosing a microphone the important thing is how it sounds in for your specific situation.
