7. Understand & Create Music With Midi

To create music with MIDI it is important to first understand that MIDI is digital information and not audio. MIDI is a language that can tell digital devices what to do.

MIDI was created in 1983 and means Musical Instrument Digital Interface. One of the most powerful musical tools ever created, multi-track computer software uses MIDI to communicate information between multiple hardware devices and software programs.

A multi-track program that records and plays back MIDI data, called a sequencer, stores a series of messages that records the different parameters. For example, what keys were played, how hard they were pressed and after how long were the keys released.

MIDI is played on a keyboard called a MIDI controller. It is really simple to manipulate MIDI data after it is recorded into a multi-track sequencing program. By simply using the computer mouse, it is possible to drag and drop notes, lengthen and delete notes, change note volumes, or change the sound played through the speakers completely.
